Recently, researchers demonstrated how a hacker can command your voice assistant (Siri, Alexa, etc), using Ultrasonic sound — A.K.A sound that humans cannot hear.

DolphinAttack: Inaudible Voice Commands:
https://arxiv.org/pdf/1708.09537.pdf

The researchers show how one can construct modulated audio snippets of which the voice assistant will respond to. These modulated audio snippets cannot be detected by human ears. These sounds are usually above 20,000Hz (10kHz).

In my opinion, this attack surface is about to lead to some interesting vectors if manufacturers cannot begin making consumer microphones that don’t listen above 20kHz.

I finally understand what is meant by “With great power comes great responsibility”, but let us examine.

First, we must provide the actual quote, that has been adopted over time.

We can now take a look at the notion of “With great power there MUST ALSO come great responsibility”. The visual from Amazing Fantasy (1962) #15, featuring Spider-Man helps to convey the context in which it is used.

After Uncle Ben dying, he is dealing with the regret of not stopping Uncle Ben’s killer as he escapes past him. This whole time I believed this quote just conveyed being responsible with the powers that you possess. It seems to me that this also speaks to having a responsibility to use these powers in more situations than you may realize. It even opens my mind to thinking of all of the situations in which you may have the responsibility to use your powers, without being aware of the situation itself.

When I think about the type of guilt that can be associated with not taking care of this responsibility, it can become another rabbit hole.

This is an early alchemical ouroboros illustration.

From the work of Cleopatra the Alchemist (Greco-Roman Egypt).

Quoted from wikipedia:

The ouroboros often symbolizes self-reflexivity, introspection, or cyclicality, especially in the sense of something constantly re-creating itself, the eternal return, and other things such as the phoenix which operate in cycles that begin anew as soon as they end. It can also represent the idea of primordial unity related to something existing in or persisting from the beginning with such force or qualities it cannot be extinguished. While first emerging in Ancient Egypt, the ouroboros has been important in religious and mythological symbolism, but has also been frequently used in alchemical illustrations, where it symbolizes the circular nature of the alchemist’s opus. It is also often associated with Gnosticism and Hermeticism.

As one can imagine, literature, and religious text have long since referenced this symbol/concept in history. The idea of being able to provide for oneself the notion of “self-sustainability”, symbolized by a serpent feeding on itself, is a powerful concept to grasp. I am sure that you have done so already, but if not, at least ponder what this could mean for you in your life.

I watched a Ted Talk one day, and the speaker took on the task of explaining how a person can “Start a revolution”.

I found what he said to be rather fascinating — whether he was correct, or not. It began to make my mind wonder about the true mechanisms of a “Revolution”.

According to Webster’s dictionary, a Revolution is defined as:

A forcible overthrow of a government or social order in favor of a new system

So with that as our starting point, here is what the speaker stated, as his belief, of the triggers of a Revolution. According to him, one must focus on these concepts:

Challenge

Culture

Commit

The Challenge idea, refers to actually disrupting a convention, or an ideology — or at least attempting to disrupt it. Disruption can take on many forms, but I think the disruption has to be obvious. In the case of Uber, and the Taxi “industry” (I use that term loosely here), the disruption is very obvious. The difference between the way Uber, and the conventional Taxi dispatcher operates is similar, despite technology. However, being able to remove the “Taxi Dispatcher” is a disruption. Uber users probably don’t see the difference, but the disruption is there. Once one can disrupt a concept, in place with a new concept, the seed of a revolution is then planted. Think about an idea, or industry yourself; then, think of 1,000 ways to disrupt it — theoretically.

Culture means to actually build a culture around the the Disruption itself. Let’s examine Apple in this case. When the computer was a large machine that was only stored in company laboratories, there were certain people on this planet, who envisioned every household individual having a computer for themselves. I did not say that Apple was the only company who foresaw this, because that wasn’t the case. However, Apple did a hell of a job in building a Culture around that notion — more accurately, a Counter Culture. When one can build a culture around a disruption, that disruption now begins to take on a life of its own. If the revolutionary who began the culture were to die, then the Revolution can continue. This also enables the revolution to tap into a behavioral psychological effect, to which many individuals succumb. Here is a wonderful research literature on “The Psychology of Crowd Dynamics”, by Stephen Reicher.

Finally, Commit, is very simple. Here, the speaker mentions that one must Commit to the culture, and the disruption itself. This allows the revolution to have an ongoing catalyst. Every revolution has had a figure head at its core. Even the “Occupy Movement” had a figure head. However, that figure head has been dead for 409 years. If you have never heard of Guy Fawkes before, then take a gander. Even if you have never heard of him, you have probably seen his face — popularized by the movie “V for Vendetta”. The bottom line is that every movement needs a catalyst. Having a catalyst, will probably make other people involved in the revolution want to be the catalyst themselves — thus introducing a network effect as well.

This is just food for thought. However, try to go throughout your day thinking of these three mechanisms.

Let your mind wonder, and let your mind wander

Regardless of what the popular phrase is (inspired by Star Wars), empires don’t strike back. Shall we even examine what the phrase “strikes back” even means?

Striking is synonymous with inflicting damage, attacking, or making contact. So the concept of “what” is being struck, is important here. If we examine the notion of striking “back”, it’s obviously regarding retaliation of some kind. This seems, as though there is a primary source of the attack, that is NOT the empire under question.

So if the empire strikes back, who struck the empire, and is it universal?

This may seem like a pointless rant, but one must understand that similar to how we just over analyzed the notion of the “Empire strikes back”, one must also over analyze all Customer Discovery engagements with potential customers.
